This 8”x11“ handcrafted box was crafted from locally sourced pine with a Walnut or other dark wood spline joint , incorporated glass to protect artwork and is treated with a mixture of orange oil and beeswax to preserve the wood. This box has sawtooth hangers attached on the rear of the piece for easy wall mounting. The original art within is hand painted with chalk pastel on paper which has been cut out and mounted into the box using a variety of techniques depending upon the application needed. Despite having worked on a lobster boat at one time, often far enough out at sea that you couldn't even see the land, I am terrified of the ocean. I can walk through the forest, encountering rattlesnakes and bears on almost a daily basis and not bat an eye, but the very notion that squids, whales, sharks existing beneath the hull… that shakes me to my very core.. This fear has made me more curious about the ocean than any other ecosystem, which can be enumerated by the views of Blue Planet on my Netflix account. This piece is meant to encapsulate that fear and curiosity. When moving a small lever beneath the piece, you can move a small boat over the water’s surface and a great kraken below.
